Genevieve and Adam: Sept 2, 2007

SHE SAID (The real story)

Gen

Well, I hope everyone had a chance to read Adam’s page about our story. It was…fairly accurate. I’ll tell you my side.

Back in 2000 (when I had time to play the guitar), I used to love talking to people about music (I think I also liked showing off a little that I was a girl that could play a guitar decently). Anyway, there was this guy Steve in our class that I would sometimes talk to because he played guitar too. We were walking to class one day, and he said:

(steve) “Oh, like, you know who’s in a band and plays guitar? Adam…Adam Brain”

(me) “who?”

(steve) “You KNOW…Adam…what…you don’t know Adam?”

My first thoughts were:

1. Awesome, another guitar player!
2. Did he say his last name was Brain? Like…Brain?

We walked into class, and there he was…A black hat, stubbly face and a giant, giant smile.

Shortly after was the G-string conversation, and after that we started talking. One day a bunch of us were sitting down in the cafeteria, and I had to go catch my bus. Out of nowhere, he volunteered to come and sit outside with me, and we had a decent conversation, sans-cockiness. We became friends shortly after.

It was a bit before he met my ex-boyfriend for the first time, but he’s right, he did call me right after and tell me he was a nerd. I feel compelled to mention that I didn’t call him that night just to talk, but because we had a homework assignment. Even though we weren’t in the same classes. Ahem. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Over the course of the next year, Adam tried many of his *well-crafted* moves to try and get us to go on a date, and was unsuccessful. I was halfway smitten, but didn’t know if I could handle his boisterous behaviour. Adam seemed to have a filter missing between his brain and his mouth. Whatever he thought, whether it was appropriate or not, came rambling out in that loud deep voice. Despite that, I could see that he was a kind-hearted guy, and was extremely passionate about the things he was into. That, and he had a giant grin and soulful eyes which still get me to this day.

To make a long story short (don’t get me wrong, I love telling this story, but not everyone likes hearing about it!), Adam convinced me to really let go in Spain, have a good time, and not think about anything, especially my ex-boyfriend. After a couple of late night conversations during the summer, we met again in September and and finally agreed to go out for lunch. He showed up and my house and I saw him looking really nervous, straightening out his brand new shirt before I came to the door. We went for a drive in his ‘86 Jeep Cherokee to East Side Marios, and Adam was just learning to drive standard. A ride that should have taken 10 minutes took 25. The whole while I watched his hands on the gear, and his face, trying to play it sooo cool. I was done for.

The rest is history.

I don’t think it worked. It was a .gif that sparkled “Congratulations!” I’m so happy for you two and I can’t wait to see you. Love, Stephen

Gen, whenever I think of you, I remember your lovely big smile. That smile has been wider in the past few years and now I know why.

Gen, we all love you very much and wish only the best for you. You have found someone special in Adam and we’re glad he makes you very happy. Take care of each other. There will be ups (the high’s) and downs (the fluffy stuff)– (trust me), take time to talk things through the fluff and things will sort themselves out, eventually if not right away.

Hope your day is one that you’ll remember as being one of the best in your life. Arvin, Kabir, Simi, Sarena and I wish you all the best on your wedding day, and every day after that.

Looking forward to seeing you.
Take care and lots of love,
Shaila
